In the last 10 years the words organic farming or organic lifestyle have become buzz words, but what is organic farming, and is organic farming the future of agriculture?
Organic lifestyle definition is not just one thing only. It is a going back to nature approach.
It is actually, an interconnected systems that includes:
Farming
A system that uses an integrated approach that strives for long term effect rather than short term gain, this includes the enhancement of soil fertility and biological diversity.Enhancement of soil fertility
It is defined by the use of fertilizers of organic origin such as compost manure, green manure, and and places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation and companion planting.Biological Diversity
Organic farmers because of their love of things grown or reared naturally, have employed a method of controlling pests such as insects, mites, weeds and plant disease. They do this by introducing a natural enemy of that pest that is destroying their plants or crop. So basically they are using nature against each other.
They believe this is safer than using synthetic fertilizers, or any growth hormones or modified organism (creatures)This approach is called Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
Poultry:
Raising chicken with any growth hormones is a no no for most chicken farmers. In addition, some operators depending on location will allow the chicken free roaming outside for a set period of time per day. They believe having them raised in an enclosed structure is too artificial and affect the quality of the taste.Livestock:
livestock or animal farmers have the same viewpoint similar to chicken farmers. They thrive to use very little or no growth hormones or permit any modified organism on any live stock such as cows, pigs or goats.Fishing Aquaculture:
The farming of aquatic organisms including fish, molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic using technology they have it possible to grow marine life and plant in coastal marine waters and the open ocean.
There are two types of aquaculture marine and fresh water ponds.
Many people believe aquaculture is the future for the fishing industry. They are convinced they are on the right track, especially when they see and hear about over fishing, marine extinction and pollution in the oceans, which has caused havoc on our marine life.
Time will tell.
